Building a HNT26-Inspired Rifle with the LSS Gen3 Chassis!

Modularity is not something we usually cover when talking about bolt-action rifles. Normally, that’s reserved for AR-15s, or the new era of handguns, with removable fire control systems that allow users to swap frames. That’s modularity. For bolt guns, it’s a bit different. Even for rifles that allow you to swap barrels, specialized tools and gauges are usually involved. MDT recently made bolt-action rifles modular. How? By rethinking the chassis.

THE LSS GEN3

The MDT LSS GEN3 Chassis System, introduced in 2025, is a fully modular bolt-action rifle setup centered on a core chassis that allows users to tailor both the handguard and buttstock without affecting the rifle's zero.

Designed for flexibility across competition, hunting, and tactical use, the system enables quick “hot swapping” of components, letting shooters reconfigure their rifle to match specific needs without re-zeroing. The chassis supports multiple buttstock interface options, including XTN, Carbine, Pistol Brace, and Fixed configurations, and accepts AR-style grips for familiar ergonomics.

The LSS GEN3 comes equipped with an Ambi Mag Latch and is compatible with MDT’s Adjustable Mag Latch. Inlet offerings support Remington 700 Short Action, Savage Short Action, Tikka Short Action rifles, and many more. Available in Black and FDE, the system emphasizes adaptability without compromising performance.

THE FORENDS

Currently, MDT offers a few different forends to help curate your setup to specific needs. Whether that’s competition, tactical use, or minimalism. But what is each one for?

• Competition 15” Forend: Built for precision rifle competition, this forend features a 10-inch ARCA rail for maximum bipod and tripod adjustability, plus compatibility with the ACC Elite Control Bridge and NV Bridge to expand mounting and control options. Its wider, flat-profile design enhances stability and improves performance on barricades, making it an ideal setup for competitive shooters who demand adaptability and control.

• Tactical Partial 13.7”, Tactical Full 8”, Tactical Full 13.7” Forend: Built for tactical, duty, and hunting applications, this forend offers full M-LOK compatibility for attaching bipods, lights, grips, and other accessories. Its fully-enclosed, or partially enclosed, top design includes an integrated NV/Picatinny rail, providing a stable mounting platform for night vision devices or optics while maintaining a rugged, mission-ready profile. The 8” version is perfect for the contemporary bolt-action “pistols” and SBRs that have become popular in recent years.

• Integrated Forend: Designed for ultra-light rifle setups, this configuration features polymer forend panels that provide a sleek, minimalist look while keeping overall weight low without sacrificing strength. It’s an ideal option for truck guns, pistol rifles, or lightweight builds where portability and simplicity are most important. This is the base forend if you choose not to add one.

WHAT ABOUT HUNTERS?

MDT hasn’t forgotten about you. While the forends mentioned above can be used for hunting, they aren’t perfect. MDT knows that. That’s why they are introducing the Carbon Fiber forend for the LSS GEN3. The new MDT Carbon Fiber Forend is crafted from lightweight, durable carbon fiber for optimal field performance. This forend features M-LOK rails on the sides and bottom, providing versatile attachment points for your essential hunting accessories. Its sleek design ensures easy maneuverability while maintaining strength. Additionally, the Carbon Fiber forend is enclosed to act as a mirage shield. But that’s not all MDT is releasing. To pair with the Carbon Fiber Forend, MDT is also releasing fixed and folding versions of the HNT buttstock.
