Eric Cortina 7 Odd Accuracy Secrets - MDT Mentions

The YouTube Channel Backfire made an awesome video interviewing world champion shooter Eric Cortina. In this video, the host seeks to gain knowledge and tips from Mr. Cortina in a casual sit-down interview.

Of the first few tips from Mr. Cortina, he says he does not “break in” his rifle barrels. From Eric’s experience, he states that over time, he noticed no difference in performance when “breaking in” barrels versus not “breaking in” barrels. Next, the topic of barrel cleaning is touched on with Eric explaining that he uses CLR cleaner to clean his stainless steel rifle barrels. To do this, Eric runs CLR-soaked patches through the rifle barrel. Then, isopropyl alcohol-soaked patches are used to ensure all CLR is removed from the inside of the barrel. On the topic of barrels, Mr. Cortina says he has seen that using a barrel tuner has helped people achieve better barrel harmonics on precision rifles.

Moving on, Mr. Cortina provides his experience with bullet pointing. Eric achieves ½ to ¾ MOA accuracy when shooting pointed bullets and says the ballistic coefficient consistency of pointed rounds is typically better than that of non-pointed rounds. Eric then speaks on sorting bullets. The interviewee sees the most variance in measurement in base-to-tip measurements of bullets, and he chooses to sort bullets by this measurement.

When asked how he focuses on helping shooters achieve better shooting form, Eric says stability, natural point of aim, and maintaining an in-line posture with the rifle are some of the most important fundamentals. The host asks Mr. Cortina about brass cleaning when reloading. Eric said he used to clean all of his brass but does not now because it consumes time, and he has seen identical results shooting cleaned and uncleaned reloads.

To conclude the interview, Mr. Cortina explains his rifle maintenance and cleaning methods. Small amounts of lubricant are used on high-contact areas, and he cleans his rifle every time he shoots to ensure performance consistency.
